I may have committed the Cardinal Sin for avid readers. I watched a movie before reading the book. I know what you're thinking... HOW COULD YOU DO SUCH A THING?! Well i must say, The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien will certainly be on my to do list for reading when I get the chance, along with the rest of the Lord of the Rings books.
The movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in my opinion was sensational. It was filled with a lot of action and suspense with some comic relief in various scenes. Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, and Richard Armitage played very convincing roles throughout the entire movie, but I believe Andy Serkis deserves a standing ovation for his performance of Gollum. Absolutely hilarious. On a more serious note, the movie lasted nearly three hours which I believe is the same amount of time all of the Lord of the Rings movies were as well. It is a tad bit long, but J. R. R. Tolkien is tough to master in a visual sense. The two Hobbit movies to follow the first are highly desired by me to watch. I think I will construct a plan to watch the Hobbit movies in order then watch the Lord of the Rings movies in order so I get the full chronology of the story. I will try to manage to read them in order, even though The Hobbit is one book not three separate books. J. R. R. Tolkien is certainly regarded as an expert of fantasy and he combined many mythic elements to create the classic storyline that most people in the world have at least heard about, not necessarily read. The movie is worth getting in Blu-Ray when it comes out as well. The visual effects were very realistic and modern. As far as accuracy I will not know until I ifnal have a chance to buy and read the novel. Until then I will have to be contempt with just the movie. Outstanding.
